I always knew we were a fairly odd family. Firsrt there was me. Too tall, too skinny, too orange. My mum was lovey but not like other mums. There was something solid about her. Something rectangular, busy and unsentimental. Her fashion icon was the Queen. Dad, well, he is more normal. He always seemed to have time on his hands. After giving up teaching university students on his 50th birthday. He was eternally availabe for a leisurely chat or to let me win at table tennis. Uncle Desmond, Always impeccably dressed. He spent the days just, being Uncle Desmond. He was the most charming and least clever man you could ever meet. His mind was on other things, though we never found out what. And then  finally there was Catherine. Katie. Kit Kat. my sister. She was then, and still is to me, about the most wonderful thing in the world. It was a pretty good childhood. Full of repeated rythms and patterns. By the time when I was 21, we were still having tea on the beach every single day. Skimming stones and eating sandwiches, summer and winter, no matter what the weather. And every Friday evening, a film, no matter what the weather. And then once a year, the dreaded New Years' Eve party.

우리가족이 꽤 별나다는 건 항상 알고 있었다. 우선 나부터 그렇다.너무 길쭉하고 너무 빼빼하고 머리도 주황색이다. 우리엄마는 사랑스러운 분이었지만 보통 엄마들과는 다른 면이 많았다. 뭔가 듬직한 면이 있으셨다. 독특하면서 늘바쁘고 냉철하셨다. 그녀의 패션아이콘은 여왕이었다. 아빠는 좀 더 평범하셨다. 항상 시간이 남아도시는 것 같아 보였다. 50세 생신 때 대학에서 학생들 가르치는 걸 그만두셨다. 이젠 얘기도 하고 나한테 탁구도 져주시면서 여생을 여유롭게 사시게 됐다. 데스몬드 삼촌은 항상 흠 잡을데 없이 차려입고 데스몬드 삼촌은 일은 하지 않으신다. 삼촌은 아주 매력적이고 영리한 사람이었다. 항상 다른 생각을 하고 사는 분이셨지만 그게뭔지 우린 결국 알아내지 못했다. 그리고 마지막으로 캐서린.케이티,킷캣이라고 부르기도 하는 내 여동생이다. 그때도 그랬고 지금도 그랬지만 그 아이는 세상에서 가장 근사한 존재다. 특별히 유별난 것 없이 전반적으로 행복한 어린 시절이었다. 내가 21살이 될 때까지 우린 매일 해변에서 차를 마셨다. 여름, 겨울 날씨와 상관없이 물수제비도 뜨고 샌드위치도 먹는다. 그리고 금요일 밤마다 날씨와 상관없이 영화를 봤다. 그리고 일년에 한번 끔찍한 새해 전야제 파티가 있다.
